Year 2

After an interesting start to term two, year two have proven just how dedicated they are to their learning, no matter what the setting! With six weeks of home-learning under their belts, our students came back to school raring to go and overjoyed to see their classmates.

In the beginning of term, our English unit saw us studying non-fiction, with a particular focus on procedural texts. We examined sets of instructions, pored over manuals, dissected delicious recipes and identified the key features of procedural texts. We became experts in recognising subheadings, paragraphs and identifying the key writing structure for procedural texts, as well as the use of imperative verbs. When we arrived back at school we put our learning to the test and wrote our own weird and wacky recipes based on George's Marvellous Medicine. Towards the end of term we focused on general features of non-fiction texts including glossaries, captions, contents and index pages. We continue to read independently every day and enjoy shared stories in the library.

After spending term one perfecting number and place value, term two saw us revising addition and subtraction strategies before starting our position and direction unit. We learnt how to interpret simple maps and describe movement on a map using concise directions and prepositions. In the very last week of term we started our geometry unit. We know that polygons are two-dimensional, closed shapes with straight sides, and we will continue to learn about the properties of polygons in term three. We will also start multiplication and division in term three so practice, practice, practice over the holidays!

The children continue to thrive in our STEM subject. They have worked in small groups to build dioramas, design musical instruments, create classroom displays and build Lego kits.

Enjoy the term break, stay safe and healthy, and we look forward to an exciting term three.
